    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Commander Nicholas John Nicholas, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in combat while serving as Assistant Approach Officer of a United States Submarine during three extensive War Patrols in enemy Japanese infested waters during World War II. Despite persistent and extremely harassing hostile opposition, Lieutenant Commander Nicholas, through the skillful and conscientious performance of his duties, assisted materially in the sinking of an important amount of Japanese shipping. His excellent judgment and cool courage under fire contributed greatly to the success of his ship and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
