The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain [then Commander] Granville Alexander Moore (NSN: 0-61462), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Destroyer U.S.S. HERNDON (DD-638), attached to the Area Screen of the Naval Western Task Force, in action against enemy forces in the Bay of Seine, France, 6 June to 4 July 1944. Charged with the responsibility of protecting vessels in the Western Task Force Area from enemy surface forces, submarines and aircraft, Captain Moore directed his ship in performing the task meritoriously and effectively. His initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
