The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Farar Benjamin Conner Martin (NSN: 0-61499), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Convoy Commander of LCI Flotilla EIGHT, carrying urgent and vital supplies to isolated U.S. Army forces at Ormoc, Leyte Island, Philippine Islands, during the period 11 – 12 December 1944. Commander Martin efficiently directed the movements of the ships and accomplished their unloading in a most expeditious manner, while in close proximity to the enemy. He directed his vessels in the rescue of survivors from a stricken destroyer, and further assisted in fire-control and caring for the wounded. During attacks by the enemy, he performed his duties with great courage and skill, thereby very materially contributing to the successful completion of the mission. His conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
