The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander [then Lieutenant] Robert Bond Lander (NSN: 0-78774), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Torpedo and Gunnery Officer of the U.S.S. S-37 (SS-142), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the THIRD War Patrol of that Submarine in the Makassar and Lombok Straits Area from 2 to 20 February 1942. Exhibiting outstanding skill and excellent judgment in the performance of his duties, Commander Lander rendered valuable assistance to his Commanding Officer in conducting a daring torpedo attack which resulted in the sinking of a 1,700-ton Japanese destroyer and, in addition, contributed materially to the success of his ship in evading strong enemy countermeasures. His leadership, courage and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
