Action Date:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant James Langford Jordan (NSN: 0-72528/1100), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as Diving Officer of the U.S.S. GFREENLING (SS-213), during the first three War Patrols of that submarine in enemy controlled waters from 20 April to 1 November 1942, which resulted in sinking 61,800 tons of enemy shipping and damaging a 22,000 tons converted aircraft carrier. As Diving Officer during a severe depth charge attack by two enemy destroyers, he, in the face of a heavy and accurate depth charge attack, courageously, skillfully and calmly handled the submarine in such a manner as to insure success of evasive tactics. As Officer-of-the-Deck his alertness in sighting smoke on one occasion and aggressiveness in commencing the attack on a dark night enabled his submarine to pursue and subsequently sink a 10,900 tons vessel which otherwise would have escaped. As Diving Officer he contributed greatly to the success of his ship in the destruction of enemy shipping. His performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
