The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander Clifford Arthur Johnson (NSN: 0-71511), United States Navy, for meritorious achievement as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. GLENNON (DD-620), in action during the bombardment of enemy positions on the coast of Normandy, France, from 6 to 9 June 1944. Commander Johnson fought his ship with great courage and determination under extremely hazardous conditions, rendering important fire support to the landings on the coast of Normandy. When his vessel was mined, he directed removal of personnel and destruction of secret equipment with coolness and skill, while subject to enemy gunfire, and remained on board for a period of about twenty-four hours, until finally driven off by intense and accurate gunfire. Commander Johnson’s leadership, courage, skill and determination were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
