The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Claud Hardy, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman aboard the U.S.S. MINNEAPOLIS (CA-36), in action off Guadalcanal on the night of 30 November 1942. During an attack on his vessel by Japanese forces, Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class Hardy aided in rescuing a man from No. 2 fireroom trunk and later worked throughout the night assisting the medical officer at the after-battle dressing station below decks. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
