The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Henry Lee Grant, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action in the performance of his duties in the U.S.S. APOGON (SS-308), during the SEVENTH War Patrol of that Submarine in the Kurile Islands area from 28 May 1945 to 14 July 1945. As Assistant Approach Officer, his excellent judgment and thorough knowledge of attack problems assisted his Commanding Officer considerably in conducting gun and torpedo attacks which resulted in the sinking of four enemy ships, including an escort vessel, for a total of 12,700 tons, and the severe damaging of a 100-ton armed picket boat. His coolness and high devotion to duty contributed directly to the success of his vessel in evading enemy countermeasures. His conduct throughout was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship, and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
