The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Bruner W. Flowers, United States Navy, for gallantry in action while serving as a Medical Corpsman aboard the U.S.S. DUNCAN (DD-485), off Savor Island on 11 October 1942. Having administered first aid to wounded personnel both during and after a battle with the Japanese, Chief Pharmacist’s Mate Flowers spent ten hours in the water after his damaged ship was abandoned. Picked up by a rescue ship, he unhesitatingly resumed his first-aid efforts, working for a period of 36 hours without rest. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
