The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant George Edgar Everly (NSN: 0-100385), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy during World War II. During three War Patrols of the U.S.S. GATO (SS-212), while serving on board that Submarine as Assistant Engineering Officer, Commissary Officer, and Assistant Diving Officer, he rendered inestimable assistance to his Commanding Officer in sinking a total of about 30,000 tons of enemy shipping. Further, on the night of 29 April 1943, he volunteered to conduct a reconnaissance of an uncharted portion of the enemy-held coast of Bougainville Island in a rubber boat to establish communications with missionaries and coast watchers to be evacuated. After the successful completion of his mission, when his unwieldy craft was carried out by the current, he displayed exemplary leadership and expert seamanship in returning the boat and crew to his ship. His actions and conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
