The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) (Posthumously) to Pharmacists Mate Third Class James Jasper Corbett (NSN: 6187937), United States Naval Reserve, for gallantry in action while serving as a Corpsman attached to the First Marine Raider Battalion, in action at New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 8 July 1943. While under exposure to heavy enemy machine-gun fire he administered first aid to a wounded comrade and safely evacuated him to a dressing station in the rear. Returning immediately to the field of battle he advanced beyond the front lines to attend other casualties. While engaged in applying an emergency dressing Pharmacist’s Mate Corbett was killed by hostile fire. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
