The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Karl John Christoph (NSN: 0-20436), United States Navy, for gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy. Captain Christoph was Senior Officer Present Afloat in the Admiralty Islands from 9 March to 23 April 1944. During this period numerous shore-to-shore amphibious operations were conducted, against enemy opposition, which resulted in the capture of Lorengau Airdrome, Manus Island, and the extension of our control over Seeadler Harbor and the adjacent Islands. He coordinated action between the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy forces involved in these operations and commanded participating and supporting forces of the U.S. Navy. By his outstanding professional ability, and extraordinary leadership, he contributed materially to the success of the operations. He accomplished the mission assigned with a minimum of casualties and material damage. His actions and conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Captain Karl John Christoph (NSN: 0-20436), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commanding Officer, U.S.S. REINA MERCEDES at the United States Naval Academy during the period September 9, 1944 to August 26, 1946. Captain Christoph was responsible for the administration and training of midshipmen at the Naval Academy during an extremely critical period. By his outstanding initiative, leadership and administrative ability in carrying out the mission of the Naval Academy in this most important assignment, Captain Christoph contributed materially to the indoctrination of midshipmen in the high standards and officer-like qualities demanded of the Naval Service, and these efforts assisted in our sustained success in the prosecution of the war and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
