The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Edward K. Bush (NSN: 6362653), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy on Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 1 August 1944, as a Senior Corpsman attached to the FOURTH Marine Division. Although wounded in action in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy on 6 July, he refused to be evacuated. Pharmacist’s Mate First Class Bush’s keen judgment, capable assistance and cool conduct under fire were exemplified on 1 August when he independently and most capably gave life saving emergency treatment to large numbers of the severely wounded. He did highly commendable medical work throughout the campaign and often volunteered for hazardous evacuation missions. His outstanding and efficient performance of duty while under fire distinguished him and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
