The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Hospitalman Apprentice First Class Daniel J. Burnham (NSN: 6669599), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in carrying out his duties as Hospital Corpsman in action against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, on 18 February 1944. Although he knew that he was risking his life, he moved under heavy Japanese sniper fire to the assistance of a wounded Marine. Had the man not already been beyond human aid, he would have undoubtedly saved his life. This act involving as it did, the exercise of the highest personal bravery in the face of enemy fire, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
