The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade (MC) Frank Joseph Broccolo (NSN: 0-126611), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 11 October 1942, aboard the U.S.S. DUNCAN (DD-485) in the Solomon Islands. Although shells had struck the ship in the near vicinity of the forward dressing station, causing serious fires, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Broccolo refused to leave his station until he could administer to the wounded. While searching for medical supplies in the wreckage of the sick bay another shell exploded in this vicinity and he was not seen again. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
