Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 3 (January 7, 1946)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class [then Private] Jack B. Best (ASN: 42114430), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of Langerwehe, Germany, on 27 November 1944. When his company was impeded by an intense machine gun and small arms concentration from a well-concealed enemy emplacement, Private Best, with utter disregard for personal safety, courageously moved across perilous terrain to an exposed vantage point. Then, although painfully wounded, he crawled within range and, with a well-directed hand grenade, silenced the hostile strongpoint, thereby aiding immeasurably in his organization’s seizure of an important objective. Private Best’s gallant actions and outstanding initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
