Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division, General Orders No. 85 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Dod M. Rains, United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with combat operations against the enemy while serving with the 1st Cavalry Division at Luzon, Philippine Islands, in 1945. As the men of Sergeant Rains troops moved through Manila, they were suddenly caught under a Japanese artillery barrage without cover. The troop commander ordered the withdrawal of the unit to prevent further casualties and called for volunteers to stay behind and help evacuate the wounded. Sergeant Rains, with several aidmen, stayed in the sector and carried out the wounded men to safety, even though the area was under enemy fire all the time. He made repeated trips back until all the wounded had been removed. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
