The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant [then Private] Yndalecio P. Estrada (ASN: 39298542), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action on Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 26 February 1945. As operator of a flame thrower, Sergeant Estrada was taking part in an assault on Hill 500 near Antipipolo. Hill 500 was an important military objective, and was being assaulted by our troops when intense mortar, machine gun and rifle fire from well concealed enemy fortifications halted our advance. Sergeant Estrada was given the mission of silencing the enemy bunkers with his flame thrower. With cool courage and audacity, he crawled forward over exposed terrain and succeeded in silencing the first bunker. He then proceeded to crawl toward another bunker and with a few short bursts put it out of action. Learning that troops on his flank were pinned down by enemy fire, Sergeant Estrada voluntarily went to their assistance and succeeded in destroying the third enemy bunker. Sergeant Estrada’s devotion to duty and his courageous action under fire were an inspiration to all who witnessed the act and were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
