The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to First Lieutenant (Air Corps) Norman H. Scott (ASN: 0-661975), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Pilot of a B-17 airplane of the EIGHTH Air Force on a bombing mission over Germany, 17 August 1943. Prior to reaching the objective his aircraft was subjected to savage attacks by enemy fighters. During the aerial battle which followed, one engine was knocked out, the right wing damaged, the hydraulic system disabled and three gun positions made inoperative, but in spite of this, Lieutenant Scott fought his way to the target where the bombs were released on an important enemy installation. The actions of Lieutenant Scott on this occasion set an inspiring example for his fellow flyers and reflect highest credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
