The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting Distinguished Flying Cross to Second Lieutenant (Air Corps) Robert F. Carlgren (ASN: 0-769722), United States Army Air Forces, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on a hazardous photographic mission over enemy territory, 13 September 1944. Escorted by P-51 fighters, Lieutenant Carlgren penetrated deep into enemy territory to obtain photographs of vital military installations. When attacked by two jet propelled ME-262 fighters, he skillfully eluded them, but in so doing became separated from his escort. Through flying an unarmed aircraft, Lieutenant Carlgren, undaunted, continued on to the objectives, unescorted. Displaying exceptional skill and resourcefulness, Lieutenant Carlgren successfully completed his mission and returned to his base with excellent photographs.
