The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Alvah G. Williams, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 3486th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. Near Burscheid, Germany, on 16 April 1945, Private Williams located a hostile machine gun along the highway leading into the town. Using the concealment of a gully Private Williams worked his way alone to a point just below the enemy emplacement from where he charged the enemy machine gunner, routed him from his foxhole and killed him. Private Williams’ gallant conduct on this occasion reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
