    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class James R. Overmier (ASN: 36641043), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 387th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in connection with military operations against an armed enemy. In a fierce fire fight near Schildgen, Germany, on 14 April 1945, Private Overmier advanced through hostile rifle, machine gun and artillery fires to the side of a seriously wounded man. While administering aid to this casualty Private Overmier was killed by an enemy sniper. Private Overmier’s gallant devotion to duty on this occasion reflects high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
