Headquarters, 97th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 14 (May 4, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Cecil L. Eyestone, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 387th Infantry Regiment, 97th Infantry Division, in action at Schaaren, Germany, on 9 April 1945. Second Lieutenant Eyestone’s platoon was given the mission of destroying a hostile artillery position which by direct fire was holding up the company advance. While establishing a base of fire, Second Lieutenant Eyestone was wounded in the face by shrapnel. Despite this wound he personally took charge of the assault squads and fearlessly led the attack on the hostile position. When 40 yards from the enemy emplacement he received a severe wound in his leg but gallantly and courageously charged the position with his men and many of the enemy were killed or captured. Lieutenant Eyestone then refused medical attention for himself until the other wounded men of his platoon had received aid. Second Lieutenant Eyestone’s gallant actions and fearless leadership on this occasion reflect great credit upon himself and the Armed Forces.
