The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Paul Calvin Taylor (ASN: RA-17693297), United States Army, for gallantry in action on 17 January 1967, while serving as a Reconnaissance Platoon Leader, with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), while in support of operations in the Republic of Vietnam. During a patrol, Staff Sergeant Taylor’s platoon came under heavy machine gun fire. While his unit was under attack, he and another Soldier led a direct charge towards the enemy position. During the valiant attempt, Staff Sergeant Taylor and his comrade were wounded and became trapped by intense enemy fire. Staff Sergeant Taylor dragged his wounded comrade to safety before re-grouping and continuing to lead the attack. Without the actions of Staff Sergeant Taylor, the injured Soldier would not have survived and the situation would have continued to deteriorate. Staff Sergeant Taylor’s action are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), and the United States Army.
