Headquarters, 1st Infantry Division, General Orders No. 258 (January 12, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Paul Calvin Taylor (ASN: RA-17693297), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force while serving with Detachment A-302, 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), from 31 October 1966 to 7 November 1966. During this period, Sergeant Taylor distinguished himself while serving as Platoon Leader during a reconnaissance operation west of Suoi Da Special Forces Camp. Upon entering the dense jungle region, his unit became heavily engaged by a numerically superior Viet Cong force. Immediately, Sergeant Taylor moved to the center of his platoon in order to retain effective control over his men. He continually supplied a heavy volume of suppressive fire as he successfully repelled the vicious assaults of the hostile forces. On numerous occasions Sergeant Taylor moved among his men resupplying them with vital ammunition and assisting the wounded. Although under extreme adversity, Sergeant Taylor never relented from his determined effort to destroy the insurgent force and instill confidence in his men. Sergeant Taylor’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal courage contributed highly to the completion of the mission. Sergeant Taylor’s unquestionable valor in close combat against numerically superior hostile forces was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
