The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Danny Joe Miller (ASN: RA-18733875), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Miller distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 18 February 1968, while serving as a squad leader with Company C, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit’s perimeter came under an intense enemy rocket, mortar and ground attack, Sergeant Miller exposed himself to the hostile fire, as he directed his squad’s fire and delivered much needed ammunition. When medical evacuation helicopters arrived, Sergeant Miller, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved into an open area and guided in the aircraft with the aid of a flare. His actions contributed greatly to the successful defense of the friendly position. Sergeant Miller’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
