The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Patrick Douglas Burke (ASN: 0-5362922), United States Army, for meritorious service in connection with military operations against a hostile force during the period October 1969 to August 1970, while serving as Assistant Senior Advisor, 4th Battalion, 4th Regiment, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. During this period, Lieutenant Burke demonstrated unusually professional zeal, determination, and enthusiasm in a demanding duty assignment. Immediately establishing a close and cordial working relationship with his counterpart, he succeeded in exerting a profound and beneficial influence in all facets of operations conducted by the contingents he advised. By his keen awareness of the problems inherent in a combat environment and by applying his extensive professional knowledge, he enhanced the fighting ability of the friendly forces operating within his area of responsibility. Exhibiting sound judgment, integrity, and stamina under conditions of stress and hardship, Lieutenant Burke earned the respect and admiration of the Vietnamese allies, who recognized his outstanding contribution to their war effort. First Lieutenant Burke’s performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
