The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Staff Sergeant Alford B. Chapman (AFSN: AF-14368023), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on 18 January 1955 near Lakeland, Georgia. On that date, when Sergeant Chapman saw a smashed automobile burning near the side of the highway, he immediately stopped his own vehicle, investigated, and discovered that the unconscious driver was trapped in the fiery wreckage. Without regard for his own safety and preservation, he smashed a window, forced his way through the blazing debris, and removed the unconscious victim to safety. By his prompt action, exemplary courage and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Sergeant Chapman has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
