The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) John W. Campbell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the Air Cavalry Troop, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Campbell distinguished himself on 1 October 1971 while serving as Mission Commander and Helicopter Commander in support of the 25th Army of the Republic of Vietnam Division in the Krek, Cambodia Area. While an estimated three North Vietnamese divisions surrounded the 25th ARVN Division, Captain Campbell’s ship was directed to make a visual reconnaissance and pinpoint enemy locations for destruction. During three sorties into enemy area, Captain Campbell’s ship was subjected to intense .30 caliber and small arms fire. He directed his helicopters onto the enemy positions and further arranged for artillery and airstrikes. During an engagement with four .30 caliber guns, one of his helicopters was shot down, landing in the midst of enemy positions. Captain Campbell piloted his helicopter through a hail of enemy fire and evacuated the downed crew. Rescue completed, he arranged for further airstrikes in the area. Captain Campbell’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
