The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Armor) Edward Buening, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 12 August 1969, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Troop F, 2d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, Troop F was escorting a convoy when the lead elements were destroyed by a command detonated mine. Lieutenant Buening leaped from his position and dashed to the front of the convoy through an intense barrage of small arms, automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenade fire. After directing his platoon to the side of the road, he directed the vehicles to turn around and insured the entire convoy of explosives had moved out of the area before he remounted his tracked vehicle. He then directed his platoon in a counterattack which allowed his men to safely withdraw from the area with not friendly losses. First Lieutenant Buening’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
