The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) David G. Scott, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Scott distinguished himself while serving as Commanding Officer of Battery C, 2d Battalion, 9th Artillery, 4th Infantry Division. On 16 September 1969, Captain Scott’s battery at Landing Zone GYPSY came under heavy rocket, mortar and ground attack. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Captain Scott repeatedly exposed himself to the intense enemy fire to direct and assist his crews in firing effective counter fire. On one occasion when one of his men was wounded by a recoilless rifle round, Captain Scott carried the man to safety under heavy fire. Captain Scott’s personal bravery, outstanding leadership and exemplary devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
