The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Donald G. McCollam (ASN: 20704927), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Ranger Battalion, on the early morning of 12 February 1943, in the vicinity 5 miles west of Sened Station, Tunisia. Sergeant McCollam displayed courage and devotion to duty during the assault on machine gun nests and gun emplacements after receiving severe wounds about the head and face when he continued to lead his section, achieving the final objective and reducing enemy resistance. Sergeant McCollam’s display of leadership was an inspiration to the members of his section and reflects credit upon his command.
