The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Howard Hirshkorn (ASN: 32812362), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 65th Armored Infantry Battalion, 20th Armored Division, in action against the enemy on 29 April 1945, at Lohhof, Germany. In the face of heavy small arms and machine gun fire, Corporal Hirshkorn advanced on an enemy machine gun that held up their column, and knocked it out with a hand grenade. He returned to his tank and, while still under fire, removed two dead and one wounded comrade to the safety of a ditch and later evacuated them to the rear. The courage, aggressiveness and high devotion to duty showed complete disregard for personal safety. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
