The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Chester P. Ulanski (ASN: 36102634), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division. Staff Sergeant Ulanski and another soldier manning a light machine gun and 57-mm. anti-tank gun respectively, engaged enemy armor and infantry counterattacking near ****, France, on the evening of 23 January 1945. In the face of small arms, Panzerfaust and 88-mm. tank fire, Staff Sergeant Ulanski engaged enemy infantry at 30 yards range to give protection to the other soldier, who knocked out and set afire a German half-track. Both men were blown into the river by overwhelming enemy tank fire, but their action contributed to delaying the German advance until friendly infantry could move to a reorganization point. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
