Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 611 (August 28, 1945)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] James Everette Crow (ASN: 33788408), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 5 January 1945, in the vicinity of Ostheim, France. By daylight, under perfect observation of the enemy, Sergeant Crow volunteered to repair vital communication lines. Although sighted and fired on by sniper, machine gun and mortar fire, he crawled through the deep snow to find the break in the line. He then connected his test telephone and directed mortar fire on the enemy he had encountered. After successfully neutralizing the enemy positions he repaired the break in the line. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Crow reflect credit upon himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
