The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jack Clair (ASN: 16117936), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 January 1945, in the vicinity of Segolsheim, France. When communications between the company command post and the observation post had been severed, Private First Class Clair unhesitatingly, under intermittent artillery and mortar fire, set out to check the line. After taking cover from a heavy concentration of artillery fire, he observed an enemy firing a machine pistol. Firing a submachine gun as he charged the position and throwing grenades, he succeeded in killing three of the enemy and causing two of the enemy to flee. He then continued on his mission and successfully reestablished the broken communication line. The gallant action and devotion to duty of Private First Class Clair reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
