The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Nicholas Marcheson (ASN: 3678914), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Tiefenbach, Germany. As the company reached the edge of town, they received heavy machine gun and small arms fire. Private First Class Marcheson, disregarding his own safety, crept for two hundred yards under the fire towards a draw. Though wounded, he continued on until he reached the defiladed position, and opening fire on an enemy machine gun position, he halted their fire long enough to allow his platoon to take up better positions. When later, the enemy concentrated their fire on him, he found other cover within hand grenade distance of another machine gun position and while rising to throw a grenade was hit again from enemy fire which caused his death. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Marcheson reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
