The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Charlie M. Jones (ASN: 34162453), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 2 April 1945, in the vicinity of Hassmersheim, Germany. After the platoon of which Sergeant Jones was a member had crossed the river and were unloading, they encountered heavy enemy small arms fire. All the other men took cover but Sergeant Jones stayed and pulled the boat to shore and helped the men from the boat. Then without hesitation and under the small arms fire he returned to the far shore to bring the remainder of the company to hold the slender bridgehead. He successfully made the hazardous trip and returned in time for the company to consolidate their bridgehead. The outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Jones reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
