Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 562 (August 22, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Technical Sergeant Bertram E. Dencer (ASN: 35013434), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 17 January 1945, in the vicinity of Sigolsheim, France. While withdrawing to establish a more suitable outpost, Sergeant Dencer and his group were ambushed by an enemy patrol. Seriously wounded, he ordered his men to withdraw into the town to warn the company of the attack and himself remained to cover their movement. When later a reinforced patrol was sent out they found Sergeant Dencer had died from wounds and the enemy had withdrawn. The gallant action and outstanding devotion to duty of Sergeant Dencer reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
