The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Donald E. Brockel (ASN: 0549492), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 February 1945, in the vicinity of Bliesbrucken, France. Lieutenant Brockel, weapons platoon leader, saw that the rifle platoon effecting a reorganization after attacking enemy strong holds was being harassed by concealed enemy machine gunners. Futile attempts were being made to dislodge the enemy from these positions. Lieutenant Brockel seized a light machine gun and, throwing the ammunition belt over his shoulder, advanced upon the enemy, firing from the hip. Following the example of Lieutenant Brockel, the platoon took up the attack in the same manner and was able immediately to dislodge the enemy from these positions, enabling the company to continue the attack and reach the objective. Lieutenant Brockel’s gallant action and outstanding leadership reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
