Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 431 (July 28, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Fred H. Gray (ASN: 38711255), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 15 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ommersheim, Germany. Private First Class Gray, first scout, crawled forward five hundred yards over rocks and through thick underbrush to neutralize an enemy machine gun when his company was held up. With no regard for his own safety, Private First Class Gray boldly rushed the enemy machine gun, capturing one officer and all the members of the machine gun crew and in addition two medical aid men. This gallant action enabled the company to continue advancing in the attack. The outstanding bravery and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Gray reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
