The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward G. Darling (ASN: 33713981), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 5 April 1945, in the vicinity of Hochstbach, Germany. When Private First Class Darling’s company advanced over high ground prior to an attack, it came under intense artillery fire and sustained casualties who were unable to receive medical aid. Private First Class Darling, with little regard for his personal safety, left his cover and went to the aid of the wounded. He evacuated eight wounded men to a place of safety and was going to the aid of another when he observed thirteen enemy riflemen attempting to regain their lines. By placing himself in their line of march, he was able to capture all thirteen and at the same time bring in the ninth wounded soldier. The courage and resourcefulness of Private First Class Darling reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
