Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 317 (July 3, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Private First Class] Harry Eisner (ASN: 42135802), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 21 April 1945, in the vicinity of Buch, Germany. As it neared its objective, the first platoon received heavy fire and engaged the enemy in a fire fight for three hours. During the fight, when nearly all the platoon’s ammunition had been expended, Sergeant Eisner, acting on his own initiative, made his way over open ground under enemy fire for a distance of two hundred fifty yards to an abandoned weapons carrier which was known to contain small arms ammunition. After having secured all the ammunition he could carry, he returned and distributed it to the members of the platoon. This re-supply of ammunition enabled the platoon to continue the engagement and to attain the objective. Sergeant Eisner’s resourcefulness and magnificent courage under fire were directly responsible for the success of the platoon’s operations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
