The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Herbert Black (ASN: 38061884), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 255th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 3 January 1945, in Achen, France. Private First Class Black was a member of a squad which was engaged in clearing buildings in the city. Although he was wounded in the foot by enemy sniper fire, he refused evacuation and continued to fight. When an enemy tank approached, Private First Class Black secured a bazooka and took a firing position at a range of about fifty yards. Although the tank directed intense fire at him, wounding him in the shoulder, Private First Class Black stood his ground and made a direct hit with the bazooka, knocking the tank out of action. Private First Class Black’s magnificent courage and devotion to duty under enemy fire are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
