The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] George S. Marquis (ASN: 35575383), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 1 April 1945, in the vicinity of Hockmal, Germany. Sergeant Marquis volunteered to lead his squad across open ground to seize two houses occupied by the enemy. After skillfully maneuvering his squad into position, Sergeant Marquis volunteered to lead an aggressive attack which resulted in the capture of the two houses. This capture enabled the platoon to enter the town and prepare the way for other forces to advance. Sergeant Marquis’ courage and gallantry under fire reflect high credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
