Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 273 (June 21, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Jackson L. Raines (ASN: 19133729), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 9 April 1945, in the vicinity of Stein, Germany. When his entire company was pinned down by intense machine gun and small arms fire, Private First Class Raines, with other members of the headquarters section, established flank protection. He sought the enemy and killed at least seven. So continuous and effective was his fire that the enemy, apparently believing that a large force faced it, surrendered in large numbers. When the heavy firing ceased, Private First Class Raines was found dead, his ammunition exhausted. Private First Class Raines’ magnificent courage and gallantry under fire reflect the highest credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
