Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 243 (June 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Truman Mayer (ASN: 7006648), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 25 April 1945, in the vicinity of Leipheim, Germany. Sergeant Mayer and his squad, while on outpost duty, bore the full brunt of an enemy counterattack. When the units on either side were driven back, the enemy surrounded the squad, finally overrunning it after one hour and a half. Sixty enemy dead were found in front of Sergeant Mayer’s position at the end of the action. Such gallantry and devotion to duty, under hazardous conditions, reflect great credit on Sergeant Mayer and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
