Headquarters, 63d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 243 (June 14, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class [then Private] Arthur H. Iddings (ASN: 31435113), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 8 April 1945, in the vicinity of Dorzbach, Germany. During an advance across an open field, Company K was held up by strong resistance from numerous enemy pockets, each consisting of several automatic weapons and snipers. Private First Class Iddings, without regard for his personal safety, moved his machine gun forward to an exposed position while under heavy enemy fire. Upon reaching the position, he returned the enemy fire, causing the enemy gunners to seek cover and enabling the company to advance. Just after completing this voluntary mission, he received a fatal head wound from a sniper’s bullet. Private First Class Iddings’ magnificent courage in the face of enemy fire contributed greatly to the success of his company’s operation. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
