The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William H. Bryson (ASN: 35926216), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 253d Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 16 April 1945, in the vicinity of Michelbach, Germany. Private First Class Bryson was leading his squad down a road in a woods when it was forced by an enemy machine gun to take cover. Without regard for his personal safety, Private First Class Bryson returned through the machine gun fire to rescue a wounded soldier. Later, in the same engagement, Private First Class Bryson was killed. His outstanding courage and coolness under fire reflect credit upon himself and upon the Armed Forces of the United States.
