The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class John J. Barry (ASN: 12097265), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Battery A, 861st Field Artillery Battalion, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 April 1945, in the vicinity of Trienbach, Germany. During an attack across open terrain, Private First Class Barry, acting as artillery forward observer, occupied exposed positions under direct enemy small arms and machine gun fire to adjust artillery upon the enemy. Although severely wounded, he remained at his post until directly ordered to be evacuated. The intrepidity with which Private First Class Barry accomplished his mission was an inspiration to all those who witnessed his action. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Private First Class Barry reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
