The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Robert E. Farrell (ASN: 0-447704), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 254th Infantry Regiment, 63d Infantry Division, in action on 19 – 20 March 1945, in the vicinity of Ensheim, Germany. Captain Farrell, Battalion S-3, under intense enemy fire moved on to the battlefield from the Battalion Observation Post, reorganized a company, and personally directed the capture of seven strongly defended enemy pillboxes which were holding up the unit. The intrepidity with which Captain Farrell performed this heroic act was an inspiration to all those under him. The magnificent courage and outstanding gallantry under fire of Captain Farrell reflect the highest credit upon himself and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Armed Forces of the United States.
